English Heritage Support for Revised King Alfred Proposals

Karis Holdings has welcomed formal confirmation of English Heritage’s overall support for the King Alfred project.

Karis is very pleased that English Heritage is now able to support the revised scheme and confirmation that earlier issues regarding the wider impact of the proposals on long and medium range views have been dealt with to their satisfaction.

English Heritage has confirmed that they support the proposed shape and height of the buildings and advise that ‘the changes to the perimeter blocks create the potential for a much more cohesive scheme’, and in particular endorsed the design of the east plaza which ‘now works well in creating the visual invitation from St Aubyns and providing the connecting views through to the sea.’

English Heritage has offered specific advice on design issues but ‘are for the most part content with the revised form of the scheme’. Further issues regarding the treatment of the public areas surrounding the King Alfred site do not relate to the development site and this area is currently being considered within a wider public realm strategy by Brighton & Hove City Council.

Commenting on the report Karis Managing Director, Josh Arghiros, said: “We are delighted that English Heritage has confirmed their support for the revised plans. Both English Heritage and CABE have now confirmed that they have no reservations regarding the height and scale of the development; the number of apartments; the design of the sports centre and the public realm. This is a fantastic endorsement of the work that has been put in to enhance the proposals by Frank Gehry and our design team. Karis is committed to delivering an outstanding scheme and we and we look forward to working with all parties further to reach a successful planning consent.”
