3 to 1 in favour of King Alfred Plans
A major opinion poll by the leading independent researchers ICM has demonstrated emphatically that the vast majority of people in Brighton and Hove are in favour of the plans put forward by Karis Holdings for the redevelopment of the King Alfred.
Three times as many residents supported the plans than opposed them in the telephone survey of 1,000 people spread across Brighton and Hove, representing the geographical and demographic spread of the city.
Support was strong across the whole city with people in Hove, in close proximity to the site, little different to the rest of Brighton with again almost 3 to 1 in favour.
Support was strongest amongst the under 45’s who are looking to a brighter and bolder city in the future.
This overwhelming majority were as keen on the design itself as they were on the new leisure, sports and swimming facilities being provided and welcomed the scheme’s ability to modernize and redevelop the area. The small proportion of people against the plans mainly cited a dislike of the design as their reason for objection.
The most resounding result showed that six times as many people felt that the King Alfred redevelopment would make Brighton & Hove a better city than those who felt it would not.
Commenting on the report Karis Managing Director, Josh Arghiros, said: “This is a real endorsement of what we are trying to deliver for the people of Brighton & Hove. We’ve heard the noise generated by a small minority of people who are against the scheme but this is the first chance residents across the City have had an opportunity to give their views and they have given our plans a resounding thumbs-up. The city needs the King Alfred scheme, business leaders are massively behind the scheme as they can see its benefits and now the people have made their choice clearly. Let’s hope all the politicians are listening.”

ICM Methodology
A random sample of domestic telephone numbers was drawn by ICM Research within the administration districts of Brighton & Hove and residents were interviewed by telephone. ICM conducted 1000 interviews with a representative sample of people residing in Brighton & Hove between the 4-8th Jan 2007.
The fundamental principle of sampling is to ensure that a representative cross section of people within any particular area is obtained, then the answers produced from any sample will quickly increase in accuracy the more interviews undertaken. Samples of 1,000 will be accurate to within 3%. Based upon these tried and trusted methods ICM has conducted polls across the whole country using samples of 1,000 people and the outcomes have, on average proved accurate to within 1% of the result.
Quotas were therefore set on age, gender and working status to ensure that the sample reflected the demographic profile of people living within the eligible geographic area. Finally the data were weighted to the known profile of the population by age, gender, working status and housing tenure.
