Black Lion Street set for Revival

Black Lion Street, once one of the most fashionable streets in the heart of Brighton, is set for a revival thanks to proposals by Karis Developments. The plans, recently approved by Brighton & Hove City Council, are set to transform the rundown road into an attractive and welcoming area in The Lanes directly adjoining Brighton seafront.

The stunning plans include the redevelopment of Moore House and the restoration of 8 Black Lion Street. Karis are also providing substantial funding to improve pedestrian access and safety in the road, which together with the provision of public artwork, will enhance the street scene to create a pleasant and inviting environment.

Internationally acclaimed architect Piers Gough of CZWG Architects has designed the plans for Moore House, completely transforming the front of the building and the dismal 1960s office block. The scheme will create more than 24,000 sq ft of contemporary office space over four floors, each floor with its own roof terrace, and secure basement parking for 31 cars. Two new restaurants will be created at ground floor, bringing life and activity into Black Lion Street.

The facade of number 8, one of the few remaining Old Town buildings in Black Lion Street, is to be sensitively restored and brought up to date to create a unique entertainment venue offering individual karaoke suites for parties of four to sixteen people. 8 Black Lion Street, only recently acquired by Karis, is currently in complete disrepair and has lain derelict for more than twenty years.

Josh Arghiros, Karis Managing Director said: “We are very excited about this project, which will transform Black Lion Street and restore this area of The Lanes into one of the most fashionable streets in Brighton - as it once was in the eighteenth century. The scheme has been carefully designed to create a mix of uses and establish an attractive destination that will be inviting to all ages. We are delighted that our proposals have attracted a great deal of interest and we look forward to announcing the arrival of some exciting well known names into Brighton, names that will undoubtedly boost the city’s growing reputation as one of the UK’s top culinary destinations.”
