CZWG Architects

Karis has worked with Piers Gough of CZWG Architects on several projects and his local knowledge of the architecture and history of Brighton & Hove, together with his skill and expertise, has been invaluable in helping to create the King Alfred Project.

CZWG Architects is well established and internationally renowned company. Nicholas Campbell, Roger Zogolovitch, Rex Wilkinson and Piers Gough studied together at the Architectural Association School in the late '60s, setting up their first office while still at the School.

The partnership of CZWG was formalised in 1975, a period when society was reeling from the insensitivities of Modernism. Attempting to restore an architecture of sensitivity the firm developed a skill in the transformation of existing buildings both in terms of function and appearance. It is a particular skill which relies on knowing when the inherited form and structure of a building must be fought rather than subsumed. This ability to re-interpret and rejuvenate the past seeded CZWG's major contribution to a new era of modern architecture.

The ability to make new architecture publicly appealing attracted the firm to the urban residential developer, and the practice quickly gained a reputation for attractive and innovative high density housing which also coincided with the regeneration of London's Docklands in the 1980s, enabling the practice to hone its urban design skills on larger tracts of redundant industrial land. A single stretch of the Thames, Limehouse Reach, now supports nearly a thousand homes by CZWG.

At the same time commissions in other realms of architecture exploited the practice's wide-ranging skills and the firm now also has a significant track record in offices, education, transport, shopping, leisure, art galleries, exhibitions, and masterplanning. It specialises in complex mixed-use schemes and has clients in both public and private sectors who have come to value its ability to gain challenging planning permissions in difficult circumstances.

The practice prides itself on its understanding of the planning process, funding opportunities and practical, sustainable construction - a prerequisite for the prolific output of built work - with over sixty individual projects delivered. But this pride in realism has not eclipsed the fire of vision, creativity and innovation which launched the practice thirty years ago.
